I have a TO-30 with a bad engine. Is there another engine we can put in it?
You can use a Z120 block, but Z129 blocks as well as Z120 blocks seem to show up on Ebay on a regular basis. There were two of them for sale within the last month. There are several Z134 blocks on there now but no Z120 or Z129 today.
You can also purchase a rebuilt short block or long block from CT Farm and Home and Tractor Supply. They will take your cracked block in exchange as long as it is complete. If the cracks are only between the cylinders on the top of the block it is not necessary to repair them. If the head gasket is sprayed with several coats of Permatex Copper Coat, and then properly installed and correctly torqued the cracks will seal.
If the block is cracked on the bottom between the cylinders or any other place they can be repaired either by welding, stitching or bolting. Cracks in the bottom usually extend through the bearing supports so once a repair is made the block has to be line bored. At any rate, do not scrap your old block. If you purchase another block the old one can be sold as a core to one of the companies that sell rebuilt engines. These companies have the facilities to repair cracked blocks. Check with antique car or tractor clubs near you to locate an individual or shop that repairs cracked blocks.
